Sunday 5 May — Ride2Riverstone

A few of us from CAMWEST are helping the Rivertone Lions Club once again organise the Ride2Riverstone event which is scheduled for Sunday May 5th 2013. The ride takes place around the semi-rural areas of the Hawkesbury and Hills area of North-Western Sydney and raises funds for the The Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

All rides are loop rides, starting and finishing at Riverstone, and the distance choices are approximately 30, 50, 80 and 100 km.

If you'd like to help promote the event, an A4 poster can be downloaded and printed from the A4 flyer (PDF). These could be displayed in local coffee shops, bike shops, uni campuses, work places.......where ever you think bike riders might see them. Please make sure you're allowed to display them first though!

For more details and on-line registration see ride2riverstone.com.au.

Four-day Ride — Rooty Hill to Canberra — 6:30 AM Monday 6 April – 3:00 PM 9 April 2009

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a 4 day ride from Rooty Hill to Canberra starting 6:30 AM Monday April 6th. Route chosen with pub accommodation in mind, however camping is also an option.

Would anyone like to join me for all or part of the ride?

See sydneycyclist.com for more details.

Since Rob has some future updates to make, he said:

Probably best just to add the link to the Sydeny cyclist site, rather than copying all the text. This way the info is in only one place, so is easy to update!

Brief Ride report

6 Riders experienced a wonderful sunny Sydney Winter's day. There was a bit of a headwind for part of the return leg. The 'middle eastern' cultural experience in Auburn was heightened due to the fact that Turkey had just won the Euro 08 qualifier the night before. Heaps of people lined the streets wearing Turkish flags and red & white hats. Plenty of cars cruising the streets, draped with flags and horns blaring. The scenic route was taken to Bankstown where we enjoyed lunch in Asia. A few of us were feeling a little tired towards the end. An additional stop at Abbotsbury recharged the batteries for the climb to Moonrise lookout in Western Sydney Regional Park and then the (mostly) downhill run along the M7 path back to Rooty Hill. The ride ended up being about 98 km in length, and we made it back to Rooty Hill around 5pm.

Here is a photo taken at Sugarloaf Ridge picnic
area in Western Sydney Regional Park last Saturday.

We had 11 riders take part in the ride. We decided to rename the ride ‘The Western Sydney Parklands Rocky Road ride’. The first few kms of the Parklands track was quite ‘rocky’. At the lunch stop at Austral home-made Rocky Road was available. We didn't go hungry! The only problem on the ride was a puncture....my rear tyre.

Distance:

Pace:

Grade:

Kids ‘bike rodeo’ from 2 PM. Suitable for children of all ages accompanied by a cycling adult, most suitable for children under 14 years. A ‘bike rodeo’ is bicycle skills practice such as riding, stopping, restarting quickly, gear changing, and sharp turning.

Ride itself begins at 3:00 PM sharp. Leisurely ride along path under M4 to Auburn and back. Since the ride is an “out and back” route you can simply stop when your kids have had enough and either return yourself or wait for us to return.

All children under 16 must be accompanied by a cycling adult. All cyclists must wear a helmet and should bring, at least, a spare tube that fits their bike (including the kids bikes), sunscreen and a water bottle.

All welcome even if you don't have kids. Ride advertised on page 7 of 12 March Parramatta Advertiser with story and photo, so I don't know if we'll get 5 or 50.

Hello all who did the Night ride along the M7 and commiserations to those who missed it.

Enjoying a meal at Sasha's

Special thanks to Rob Kemp for the organisation of the ride, pre ride dinner at the Rooty Hill Indian Restaurant and his role as Ride Leader. 15 Riders turned up for what became a 48 km ride along part of the M7, Liverpool/Parramatta TWay and back on to the M7. We started about 7:30 PM and finished about 11.45 PM. There were all types, a recumbent, some nice road bikes, a few tourers and hybrids and a couple of mountain bikes.

Cheerful night riders, some laid back.

The weather was perfect. Nature provided us with a still, cool night and an almost full moon. The track was in good condition and there was no other competition, except for three older blokes on pocket motorbikes who were gone as fast as they arrived. We attracted some comments from motorists where we crossed paths, mostly good natured heckling.

A special mention for Adrian from BNSW who decided to join the ride at the last minute, made a cracking pace along the M2 and M7 to join us less than half an hour into the ride. What was your average time Adrian, before you joined us?

Thanks also to Mark from Colyton, our novice rider in the group. He persevered with a few mechanical problems until Rob and a couple of others fixed them and then was able to enjoy the rest of the ride. You were NOT a burden; please come and ride with us again.

To the rest of the riders, thanks for your company, interesting conversation and pleasant attitude throughout the ride. You all reminded me of the reasons why we venture out on these group rides at times, to enjoy a nice ride and even nicer company.

Don't forget Rob's next couple of rides.

Cheerful cyclists outside the Mens Ward of Old Cumberland Hospital.

23 riders partook of the 10th(?) Heritage Ride, including CAMWESTies Peter Gilbert (the ever-reliable tail rider), and John Holstein. It was a good mix of adults and children.

We had good publicity beforehand, appearing in PushOn, the Parramatta WhatsOn, Parramatta Sun (p2 with photo), Advertiser (small article in the back section), as well as the ABC WhatsOn. Not sure if it made it into the Telegraph Weekender.

The weather wasn't good on the Saturday and a few people probably made up their minds when they went to be not to participate. (I know at least one person from Parramatta City Council did). However the gods were kind to us, with no rain and the sun even breaking through to make it a surprisingly hot day.

Paul Bowyer telling how it is.

The route was changed slightly and worked much better, doing the Elizabeth Farm section before going the Female Orphan School, crossing the Elizabeth St bridge and including Barrack Lane. The ride took about 2.5 hours, and we'd arrived at the Park Cafe by about 10:50 AM, having set off around 8:20. No incidents were observed. The portable microphone worked faultlessly (yes I still have it Ian, and anyone else that's interested!)

John gave a good talk at the end about the reinvigorated CAMWEST.

General feedback on the ride was good. The participants were locals and there's always surprise at some of the terrific buildings tucked away in Parramatta.

Rear view of the happy crew.

We finished up at the Park Cafe in Parramatta Park. We've done this several times before, but when I was booking it, the new manager there, Steve, had a lot of difficulty showing interest in this business (wanting pre-ordered or set menus). No bookings on Sundays etc. etc. In the end he took a booking for 25 max. Luckily that worked out to be the right number. Vicki seemed a more human person who was keen to keep our business next time! I was sufficiently annoyed to work out a new route that could end elsewhere and may introduce this next time.

Cheers Paul

PS. I noticed a photo in this week's Advertiser of the ride also. Thanks John! Would love to see the photos!

A report on the Parramatta River Ride

Whilst I got wet on route to the start before 7 AM, once the official ride commenced there was no actual rain, though the conditions were quite wintery.

By the time we got to Concord the conditions were perfect for cycling: cool and dry.

No-one lost, no flat tyres, one injured pride — an MTB rider tried a gutter jump and missed in the mess that is the Rhodes redevelopment.

A good fun morning.

This is a 3 hour, 50 to 60 km ride of continual uphill and downhill. Suitable for fit adults with some hill riding experience. Almost completely on-road with typical suburban traffic situations.

This ride through the hills is an annual ride that I do to make sure my legs and our bikes are fit for the 5 November ’Gong ride, and is not intended to attract beginners, it's too difficult a ride.

The 6:00 AM start reflects that it is for a ride for committed experienced riders, and for that you'll either get out of bed, or not. Sunrise is 5:00 AM that day; I know from the Geoscience web site that calculates it for you, so by 6 am conditions for riding will be absolutely perfect, and roads traffic free.

I'm not running this to attract new cyclists as the other rides are intended, I'm doing the ride anyway, so I thought I'd throw it open to others that might like to attend.

Here is a Detailed plan of the ride.

Where we went

Wentworthville to Olympic Park and Muffin Break via Jones Park, M4 cycleway and Adderley St.

Return via Duck River, Granville Park and Merrylands Pool.

Nature of the ride

About 28 km. A leisurely ride along fairly flat cycleways with a relaxing coffee stop.

Enjoy Parramatta Heritage — on Your Bike!

Ian Macindoe led the 2006 Parramatta Heritage Ride B on 9 April. My six-year old son and I joined in the fun! Some notes on the ride. PDF format of above: ride, notes. I'm coming for the next one, Ian!

Where is the bath house Governor Brisbane built himself to soothe his arthritis? Where are two of the five clocks given to the colony by King George IV in 1822? Where is Australia's oldest publicly-owned building? Where did Governor Fitzroy's wife die, after her carriage overturned when the horses bolted? Where can you find Australia's (arguably!) oldest licensed hotel? The answer to all these is Parramatta, a place wonderfully rich in history in the very heart of Sydney. And you can visit all these places on your bike, with a little help from your friends at CAMWEST, and their brand new Parramatta Heritage Ride website.
